The Lavender you see in this photo is lavender that I actually harvested right out of my own back yard! This is species is called Spanish Lavender (Lavandula Stoechas).
I kept checking on my Lavender plant in my back yard, honestly because of its splendor and beauty. I mean look at that floret!
However, I had to come terms with the fact that lavender doesn't last for ever, even though it is perennial(perennial means plant that blossoms yearly indefinitely ). It's important to harvest your plants before the blossoms wither . I went on and harvested these babes ... I wasn't sure what I'd use them for yet. I just brought them in my kitchen and then hung them to dry..
Ah Ha! Oil, You can't go wrong with an infused oil, well you can but hopefully the info here will help you with the do's and don'ts of making infused oil!
1.Rinse your lavender well. Allow your lavender to air dry for at least 24 hours, the color will change , that's ok.
Allowing your Lavender to dry will expel the water from the plant. You do not want fresh herbs infused into your oil or the water will cause your oil to go rancid.
2. Crush the dried Lavender and place it into a glass jar filling the jar 1/2 to 3/4 way with the herb.
Then pour your Organic oil(Extra Virgin Olive,Almond, Pure grapeseed etc etc) over the Herb filling the jar to about an inch from the surface.
Allow This to sit in a dark place for 6 weeks.
Thereafter strain the oil with a cheese clothe into another glass container (If You have a dark colored glass container use that for storage)
And use on skin , hair etc.
Enjoy Lavender -Melanie xo~
